Morocco wants to legalize cryptocurrency

Morocco is in the process of passing a bill on cryptocurrencies. This was stated by the head of the central bank, Abdellatif Djouhri, at an international conference in Rabat, according to information Reuters.

Although cryptocurrencies have been banned in the country since 2017, the population continues to use them illegally, ignoring restrictions.

In addition, the head of the country’s central bank, known as Bank al-Maghreb, said that the regulator is studying the possibility of introducing its own digital currency (central bank digital currency, CBDC).

“We, like many countries around the world, are exploring the extent to which this new form of currency can help achieve certain public policy goals, especially around financial inclusion,” Juahri said.

It should be noted that many criticize the very initiative of creating a CBDC by central banks due to excessive centralization. For example, in January 2024, then US presidential candidate Donald Trump called CBDC a “threat to the freedom” of Americans and promised to ban the creation of such an asset.

Subsequently, in May, the US House of Representatives approved a bill to ban the issuance of the digital dollar.

It should be noted that the Moroccan authorities already have a “Digital Morocco 2030” strategy to support startups in the field of artificial intelligence and blockchain. It must help the country become an influential player on the world stage.
