Moscow accuses Council of Europe of ‘Russophobia’

Russia today accused the Council of Europe of being a “Russophobic” body in the service of the West, stressing that it rejects the “Brussels lessons” on human rights.

On Wednesday, the Council of Europe announced that it was expelling a member of the Russian Federation because of the war in Ukraine.

“Because of the Russophobic activity of the West, this body has lost its raison d’être,” said Maria Zakharova, a spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry. “By putting (EU) interests above its own, institutionalized objectives, the Council of Europe has become a mere instrument of the European Union, NATO and its satellites,” he said.

Russia has been a member of the Council of Europe since 1996. However, its membership in its main bodies was suspended on February 25, a day after the invasion of Ukraine.

According to Zakharova, this expulsion “does not change anything in essence for us. It simply frees us from complying with procedures and obligations imposed on us.”

“Russia does not take human rights lessons from Brussels,” he said, accusing the EU of “negotiating exceptions and preferential claims” on the values it defends “as if it were a bargain”.

Russia’s withdrawal from the Council of Europe raises fears that the human rights situation in the country will worsen.
