Moscow and Kiev accuse each other of bombing Ukraine nuclear plant

Moscow and Kiev accused each other on Tuesday of risking catastrophe by bombing the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant in southern Ukraine, as they await a report from the United Nations (UN) nuclear agency on its condition.

The plant, operated by Ukrainian technicians, was captured by Russian forces in early March, shortly after the invasion of Ukraine.

Russia and Ukraine have accused each other for weeks of jeopardizing their security – and that of Europe – by bombing the site and neighboring areas. But so far, no independent third party has been able to establish who inflicted what damage on the plant.

It’s unclear whether that will change on Tuesday, when the United Nations’ International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) releases a report based on a fact-finding mission about the plant that is expected to detail the damage.

IAEA Chief Rafael Grossi led the mission last week and two IAEA officials remain on site monitoring the situation. Grossi is expected to inform the UN Security Council in New York about the findings later on Tuesday.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned on Monday of a near “radiation catastrophe” at the plant and said the Russian bombing showed Moscow “does not care what the IAEA will say”.

Russia, which has questioned why it would bomb its own forces which it says are guarding the plant, on Tuesday accused Ukrainian troops of bombing the facility, the largest in Europe, a day earlier.

Russia’s diplomatic mission to international organizations in Vienna, where the IAEA is based, said on Telegram that three Ukrainian projectiles had landed near the plant, and published images of projectile impacts to support its claim.

Reuters was unable to verify the allegations by either side.
