Moscow and St Petersburg city deputies call for Putin’s resignation

Deputies from 18 municipalities in Moscow, St Petersburg and Kolpino have called for Russian President Vladimir Putin to step down, according to a petition with a list of signatures posted on Twitter on Monday.

“We, the municipal deputies of Russia, believe that the actions of your President Vladimir Putin are harmful to the future of Russia and its citizens. We demand the resignation of Vladimir Putin from the post of President of the Russian Federation,” said the petition posted by Ksenia Thorstrom, a local MP for the Semenovsky district of St.

The petition follows Russia’s first regional and municipal elections since the start of the war, which brought a sweeping victory for pro-Kremlin candidates.

“The text of the petition is concise and does not “discredit” anyone. If you are mundep (Municipal Representative) and want to participate, welcome,” Thorstrom said in a Twitter post.

The Moscow district council (Lomonosovsky) also demanded Putin’s resignation, saying: “His views and his model of government are hopelessly outdated and hamper Russia’s development and human potential.”

Last week, deputies from the municipality of Smolninskoye in St. Petersburg asked the State Duma of the Russian Federation to bring charges of treason against Vladimir Putin.

Several of them now face charges for discrediting the Russian army, according to a Twitter post by one of the local officials, Nikita Yuferev.
