Moscow announced the deportation of 45 Poles and two Bulgarian diplomats

Russia today announced the deportation of 45 Polish diplomats and two Bulgarians in retaliation for similar measures taken by Warsaw and Sofia in recent days.

“Based on the principle of retaliation, 45 associates of the Polish embassy and consulates general in Irkutsk, Kaliningrad and St. Petersburg have been identified as undesirable,” the foreign ministry said in a statement.

The diplomats are due to leave Russia by April 13.

In late March, Warsaw announced the deportation of “45 Russian spies posing as diplomats,” amid a Russian-led invasion of Ukraine.

Two Bulgarian diplomats are also being deported from Moscow following Sofia’s decision to deport Russian diplomats in March.

Bulgaria deported 12 Russian diplomats in March and another in April for “activities incompatible with their diplomatic regime”. It also recalled its ambassador from Moscow for consultations following “non-diplomatic and rude” comments made by the Russian ambassador to Sofia.
