Moscow: Condemns Zelensky’s call for the West to close its borders to Russians

The Kremlin today described as “absurd” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s call for Western countries to close their borders to Russian visitors to punish Moscow for its aggression against Ukraine.

In an interview with the Washington Post this week, Zelensky stressed that he believes “the most important sanctions are to close the borders, because the Russians are in the process of taking territory from another country.”

Whatever their political views, Russians should “live in their own world until they change their philosophy,” the Ukrainian president added in this interview.

“The absurdity of this reasoning goes beyond all limits and can only cause a negative reaction,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov reacted today.

“Any attempt to isolate the Russians or Russia has no chance of succeeding (…) These initiatives do not sound good,” he added.

Following Zelensky’s appeal, Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas today urged European countries to no longer issue tourist visas to Russians wishing to travel to Europe.

“Travel to Europe is a privilege, not a human right…Time to end tourism from Russia,” he tweeted.

In response, former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev compared Callas to a “Nazi”.

Russia is already subject to numerous economic sanctions that have a negative impact on its economy.
