Moscow demands release of hostages in talks with Hamas

The Russian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Mikhail Bogdanov asked for the release of hostages held in Gazain a telephone conversation he had yesterday and today with Hamas and other Palestinian organizations, as announced by the Russian Foreign Ministry. The move follows a series of meetings and phone calls between the president Vladimir Putin and Middle Eastern leaders last week.

The ministry said Bogdanov’s talks highlighted the military and humanitarian situation in Gaza, where Russia “confirmed its principled position on the need to cease hostilities and to urgently resolve all the humanitarian problems that have arisen, including the release of the hostages”, as reported by APE-MPE.

The announcement did not clarify whether Russia is seeking the release of all hostages kidnapped by Hamas during the October 7 invasion of southern Israel or only the Russian nationals among them. Bogdanov stressed the need to restore Palestinian unity “within the framework of the PLO (Palestine Liberation Organization)” and reaffirmed Moscow’s support for a Palestinian state that would coexist with Israel.
