In her “response” after her move Italy Moscow deported two Russian diplomats last month, expelling an Italian diplomat and summoning Italy’s ambassador to the foreign ministry.
As AMPE reminds, Italy deported two Russian diplomats after police said they arrested an Italian Navy captain for handing over secret documents to a Russian army officer for a fee.
According to a statement from the Russian Foreign Ministry, the naval officer of the Italian embassy in Moscow has been declared a “persona non grata” (unwanted person) and must leave the country within 24 hours.
The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a statement, characterized its decision as unfair Russia to deport the Italian diplomat.
“We consider the decision unfounded and unfair because it comes in retaliation for a legal measure “received by the Italian authorities defending their own security,” said the Italian Foreign Ministry.
Russia and the West have led to several deportations of diplomats in recent weeks amid tensions over Ukraine and the case of a jailed dissident. Alexei Navalny.
Moscow and Washington have specifically expelled 10 diplomats each.
The Czech Republic, for its part, has deported 18 Russian diplomats, who presented themselves as spies, while accusing Moscow of involvement in an explosion at an ammunition depot in 2014 that resulted in the death of two people. Moscow responded by demanding that 20 Czech diplomats leave the country.
Several European countries have announced deportations in solidarity with the Czech Republic. Romania made the announcement today, following a similar move by Slovakia on Thursday and three Baltic states on Friday.
