Moscow does not recognize the decision of the Council of Europe on the Litvinenko case

Russia says it does not recognize “unfounded” ruling by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) which blamed Moscow for the 2006 assassination of former spy Alexander Litvinenko.

“So far, the investigation has yielded no results, so making such allegations is the least unfounded. “We are not ready to recognize such a decision,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peshkov told reporters.

“It is not very likely that the ECtHR will have the power and the technical capacity to shed light on this case,” Peshkov said.

The ECtHR ruled today that “there is strong evidence” that the perpetrators of Alexander Litvinenko’s poisoning, identified by a British investigation, “acted as agents of the Russian state” and that Moscow provided no “satisfactory” alternative explanation.

A former KGB agent and later FSB successor, Alexander Litvinenko was ousted by the Russian secret services and later granted asylum in Britain in 2001, denouncing corruption and alleged Russian links to organized crime.

He died on November 23, 2006 after being poisoned with polonium 210, a highly toxic radioactive substance.

In a report published in 2016, the British authorities identified the Russians Dmitry Kovtun and Andrei Lugovoi as perpetrators of his murder. Moscow denies their extradition.

Lugovoi today denounced to the Interfax news agency the decision of the ECtHR as “illegal” and “politically motivated”, saying that Russia “did everything to prove the truth” but British justice did not comply with its demands.

Asked by AFP in July, Lugovoi had said the case “would remain a dark mystery” and blamed the British intelligence services for “doing everything they could to make sure we never learned the truth”.
