THE Russia ordered its top military command to begin the return of troops to their permanent bases inside the country from tomorrow, Friday, saying that the “surprise inspection” of forces in its southern and western areas, near the border with Ukraine, broadcast the RIA news agency, reports APE.

The announcement sparked a sharp rise in the ruble’s exchange rate, following weeks of tensions with the West over a large concentration of Russian troops near Ukraine.

It is not clear whether the order covers all the forces involved in this troop increase.

“I believe that the objectives of the unannounced inspection have been fully achieved. “The troops have demonstrated their ability to provide a credible defense for the country,” said Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu.

“Therefore, I decided to complete the inspections in the southern and western military district.”

He added that the troops would have returned to their bases by May 1st.

Shoigu, after attending exercises in annexed Crimea near Ukraine’s southern border today, said, however, that the armed forces must be prepared to respond quickly in the event of an “unfavorable” development in the NATO Defender Europe exercise, Interfax reported. .

Defender Europe is a multinational joint NATO military exercise led by US forces, conducted annually. From March to June, more than 28,000 troops from 26 countries will conduct exercises in more than 30 training areas in twelve countries.
