Russia has asked Israel to refrain from airstrikes near its airbase in Syria in its war against the Lebanese Shiite movement Hezbollah, as happened in October, a senior Russian official said today. Official Syrian media reported in mid-October an Israeli airstrike on the port city of Lattakia, a stronghold of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who supports Hezbollah and is backed by Russia in his country’s war.
