Moscow mayor abolishes mask use citing improving epidemiological situation

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin announced the abolition of the use of the mask, which had been imposed for a long time in public places, citing the improvement of the epidemiological situation with Covid-19 and the need to support the business that is facing pressure from the sanctions.

“The gradual improvement of the epidemiological situation allows us to make a long-awaited decision,” Sobyanin wrote on his personal website. “From Tuesday, March 15, we lift the restrictions on the use of the protective mask.”

Sobyanin said companies would no longer take measures against the coronavirus, such as measuring workers’ temperatures and keeping distances.

“At this juncture, this decision will support business activity that is under severe pressure due to sanctions,” he wrote.

Unprecedented Western sanctions against Moscow over the events in Ukraine have forced many companies to restrict their operations in Russia, increasing uncertainty about doing business in the country.

As of February 11, daily coronavirus cases had reached 203,949 due to the high transmissibility of the Omicron variant across the territory, but this number has since begun to decline gradually. Today 41,055 new infections were recorded.

Coronavirus-related deaths were also reported to have decreased. The pandemic government announced today that 533 deaths were recorded in the last 24 hours, much less than the 1,254 deaths recorded on November 20, 2021.

In Moscow, a city of about 13 million people, 957 new infections and 44 deaths were recorded in the last 24 hours.
