Moscow: ‘No comment’ on possible purchase of drones from Iran

The Kremlin spokesman today declined to comment on US claims that Russia is preparing to buy hundreds of drones from Iran.

“We have no comment,” spokesman Dmitry Peskov said when asked about the matter on a daily conference call with reporters. He assured that President Vladimir Putin will not negotiate the acquisition of such aircraft during his visit to Iran on July 19.

Putin is expected to meet in Tehran with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Iranian leader Ebrahim Raisi for talks that will focus mainly on Syria.

According to the Russian ambassador to Iran, Levan Dzhagharian, whose statements are reported by Russian media, Vladimir Putin will also be received by Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan said Monday that the US has intelligence that “the Iranian government is preparing to deliver to Russia several hundred drones,” some of which are combat-ready, on short notice.

Tehran responded to the claims yesterday, saying there was “no particular development” in technological cooperation between Russia and Iran.
