Moscow: Schroeder enigmatic mediation

The news of former Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder’s mediation trip to Moscow is causing a stir in the government and the Social Democrats. What is he trying to achieve?

How and for what reason did former Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder finally travel to Moscow on Thursday night? What did the German government under Olaf Solz and the Social Democrats, the party of the former and the current chancellor, know – or did not know? These are the main questions that are “wandering” today from the German capital, after last night’s publication of Politico magazine and Bild, which last night, about the mediation – express trip of Gerhard Schroeder for cathodic contacts with the Russian president Vlandi Putin on the war in Ukraine.

The news was confirmed yesterday after midnight by the German news agency dpa and today more and more German media are publishing their own information about the enigmatic trip. According to the n-tv network, journalists seem to have seen Gerhard Schroeder with the group and his wife in a hotel in Moscow, without, however, confirming or denying anything. According to the Russian Interfax agency, Kremlin spokesman Dietry Peshkov does not confirm anything about the mysterious Schroeder-Putin meeting. “I have no information about Schroeder. I can not say anything about it,” he said.

Private initiative, about which no one knows anything

As it seems so far, however, this trip is said to be a “private initiative” of the former chancellor of which neither the German government nor the leadership of the Social Democrats is aware. This is confirmed by the Welt newspaper, according to its own information today, with circles from the chancellor stating that the former chancellor “had no mandate and there was no coordination”, while the leadership of the Social Democrats did not seem to be aware either. For his part, Olaf Solz, already yesterday afternoon, coming to the Summit, had stated: “I do not want to make any comment”.

The fact is, however, that for some time now there has been intense dissatisfaction in the chancellery, the German parliament, but also the SPD for the attitude of the former chancellor, regarding the high positions he has held for years in supervisory boards of Russian energy giants (Rosneft, Gazprom) and The pivotal role in the construction of the Russian-German pipeline Nord Stream 2 – which is currently frozen.

Klingbaile: Anything that helps to de-escalate is welcome

On the other hand, some Social Democrats were in favor of the alleged Schroeder initiative, arguing in short that at this stage, any effort to help de-escalate is welcome. SPD co-chair Lars Klingbail told Spiegel that “anything that helps end the war is good. between the Ukrainian embassy and Gerhard Schroeder, and it remains to be seen whether there have been any recent contacts between Schroeder and Ukraine.

Analysts say that this is one of the personal bets of Gerhard Schroeder, who is trying to save his prestige and credibility, which have been severely damaged for a long time due to his very close relationship with the Kremlin.
