Moscow said on Thursday that escalating tensions between Russia and the United States over Ukraine risked a repeat of the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, according to Reuters, citing Russia’s Interfax news agency.
“You know, we could really get to that point,” said Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov. “If things continue as they are, it is quite possible based on the logic behind the events that we will suddenly wake up and see ourselves in something similar.”
Ryabkov referred to the 1962 confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union that brought the world to the brink of nuclear war.
The comment comes amid concerns in the West about the increase in Russian troops near Ukraine, while Moscow has expressed concern about Ukraine’s closer ties with NATO.
Russia has also accused the Ukrainian government of moving heavy artillery to the war zone in eastern Ukraine and pretending to be negotiating a solution to tensions in the region.
