The Russian Ministry of Defense announced today that after months of battles, his forces occupied the Toretsk city in Donetsk, eastern Ukraine. In a Russian ministry’s announcement, Toretsk is called Djerzinski, as the city’s name was formerly – in honor of Felix Djerzinsky, founder of Tseka, the infamous secret police in the Soviet Union. Kiev has not so far confirmed that the city of Toretsk has come under the control of Russian forces, but earlier today he had said that the invaders had launched a barrage of attacks in the area. Ukrainian military analysts had long been discounted that this strategic city in the Donetsk region would sooner or later fall into the hands of Russian forces. Prior to the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Toretsk had a population of about 30,000. After three years of war, it is estimated that a few dozen civilians have remained in the city.
