Russia announced today that it is coordinating its policy in the Middle East and North Africa with the Chinaan increasingly close ally of hers Moscow.
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov held talks in Doha with Zhai Jun, Beijing’s special envoy for the Middle East, with whom he exchanged views on the situation in the Gaza Strip and the conflict between Israel and the Palestinian Hamas.
In the announcement issued by the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs it is noted that it was “confirmed” that the two countries are focusing on coordinating their efforts towards a “political settlement of this and other crises in the Middle East and North Africa region”.
Russia considers that it could play the role of mediator between Israel and Hamas in the current crisis. Moscow tried to shift the blame for the situation to the United States, Ukraine’s strongest ally. Russia’s draft resolution at the United Nations Security Council calling for a humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza, the release of hostages and the safe removal of civilians was rejected. This text condemned violence against civilians and all forms of terrorism, without specifically naming Hamas.
