Moscow withdrew a draft proposal to change its maritime borders in the Baltic

A proposal by the Russian Defense Ministry to revise Russia's maritime borders in the eastern Baltic Sea was removed from an official mediation portal today after causing confusion and concern in NATO member states Finland, Sweden, Lithuania and Estonia. In its statement, the defense ministry said that the previous Soviet measurement of the border in 1985 had used mid-20th century nautical charts and thus (the measurement) did not fully correspond to more modern cartographic coordinates. But this proposal was removed today from the official web portal where it was posted. A message simply said, “Draft deleted.” It has not been made clear from the draft decree exactly how the borders would be settled and what, if any, consultations took place with other Baltic states.
