Mosque explosion leaves at least 5 dead, 20 injured in Kabul

At least five people died and 20 were injured after an explosion at a mosque in the Afghan capital Kabul on Friday (29). The attack came after traditional Friday prayers, police chief Khalid Zadran’s Taliban spokesman said. Eyewitnesses said they feared many more had died.

The blast took place in the Serahi Alauddin area of the city, Afghan private channel TOLO News reported citing an eyewitness.

Emergency, a non-governmental organization that provides free medical and surgical treatment to Afghan civilians, said in a tweet that 20 wounded were treated at its hospital after the blast.

A series of deadly explosions, mainly targeting the Shia Hazara community, has rocked several Afghan cities in the past two weeks.

Last week, 33 people died and dozens were injured in an explosion at a mosque in Afghanistan’s Kunduz province during Friday prayers, according to Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid.

That blast followed other attacks in previous days – one in the northern Afghan city of Mazar-i-Sharif and another in Kunduz, along with several explosions earlier in the week at a school and educational center in western Kabul. .

Most of the recent attacks have been claimed by the ISIS affiliate group and Taliban rival ISIS-Khorsan (ISIS-K). Last Friday’s explosion has yet to be claimed by any groups.
