Most Russian forces are within 25 km of Kiev, says UK Defense

Most Russian ground forces are currently around 25 kilometers from the center of the Ukrainian capital Kiev, the UK Ministry of Defense said on Saturday in its latest intelligence assessment.

“Fighting northwest of Kiev continues with Russian ground forces now about 25 kilometers from the city center,” the ministry said.

“Elements of the large Russian convoy north of Kiev have dispersed. This will likely support a Russian attempt to encircle the city. It could also be an attempt by Russia to reduce its vulnerability to Ukrainian counterattacks, which have had a significant impact on Russian forces,” according to the intelligence report.

teams of CNN in Kiev reported explosions in the early hours of Saturday morning, but it is unclear whether the explosions were Russian or Ukrainian attacks.

As Russian forces press in from various directions, “the concern becomes that the intention is to completely encircle the city, withdraw access to resources, bomb the city, and ultimately try to overthrow the government of Zelensky (Ukrainian President),” , said Ward.

Kiev Mayor Vitali Klitschko told CNN that the city currently only has resources – including food and medical supplies – for one to two weeks.

The other major cities of Kharkiv, Chernihiv, Sumy and Mariupol remain surrounded by Russian forces, the ministry added.
