Most violent city in Argentina paralyzes transport, classes and closes jobs

The city of Rosario, which records the highest homicide rate in Argentina, came to a standstill this Monday (11), in response to cold-blooded murders recorded last week.

After the deaths of two taxi drivers, a bus driver and a gas station attendant, in cold blood, workers from different sectors decided to partially or completely halt activities.

Classes were suspended. Buses don't run. Gas stations are not opening and taxi drivers are not working at night. And there will be garbage collection for a limited time.

On Sunday night (10), a loud uproar from residents, terrified by crime, attributed to drug trafficking factions, was heard throughout the city.

The Association of Magistrates of the province of Santa Fe, where Rosário is located, ordered a “total cessation of activities without presence in schools for this Monday”, due to the escalation of violence in the city. “The situation in Rosário is really serious,” concluded the message posted on social media.

“Due to the death of comrade Marcos, tomorrow, Monday, there will be no urban and interurban transport activities. We accompany the family at this difficult time”, wrote the Rosário drivers union, in response to the murder of Marcos Iván Daloia, 38, who was shot at least three times while working, last Thursday. He didn't survive and ended up dying this Sunday.

Last Tuesday, taxi driver Héctor Figueroa, 53 years old, who had a passenger in the front seat, was murdered with a shot to the head by a third person, who shot through the window, outside the vehicle. The following day, taxi driver Diego Alejandro Celentano, aged 32, also died after being shot by two criminals.

Last Saturday, 25-year-old gas station attendant Bruno was shot dead inside a gas station. The criminal approaches, shoots, and runs away, without the gas station attendant having any chance of reacting.

According to the local press, a penitentiary and a police station were also shot by criminals in recent days.

Since the murders, several taxi drivers' unions have called strikes. Gas stations are not opening at night and say they will maintain the measure until they find answers to the safety measures they need for the sector.

Taxi drivers are stopping from 10pm to 6am due to the lack of safety at work and the nighttime shutdown of gas stations.

In light of the episodes, the Argentine government and that of the province of Santa Fé, where Rosário is located, formed a Crisis Committee. Javier Milei authorized the use of the Armed Forces to support the city's internal security and the Minister of Security, Patricia Bullrich, informed that all crimes committed on the streets will be classified as “acts of terrorism”.
