Most young people envision their future without children

A future without children. This is how most young Italians between 18 and 20 years old expect it, according to a survey commissioned by the Donat Cattin Foundation at the Noto Sondaggi polling institute. 51% of the children interviewed do not imagine themselves as a parent. Of these, 31% think that at 40 they will have a couple relationship but without children and 20% think they will be single.

The age of the people interviewed is not what one usually thinks of family, but to be noticed is the absence of perspective, mainly for social reasons.

Above all, the lack of work (87%) and the absence of adequate policies for the family (69%)

According to the data collected by the poll young people can be divided into 3 categories: there are those who fear that a child will limit freedom, a position also linked to young age, there are those who have the realistic fear of not being able to afford a child economically and those who do not want to have children for lack of trust in society.

Italy has been experiencing a period of low birth rates for years and the situation has been exacerbated by the pandemic. In 2020 there are about 300 thousand fewer Italians due to the increase in deaths, never so many since the years of the Second World War, but also from the decline in births. It is as if a city as large as Catania had disappeared.

The 400 thousand children born in 2020 are a negative record in the 160 years of the unification of Italy which is already part of a statistic with a minus sign. In 2019, only 420,000 babies were born. This is 160,000 fewer since 2008. In the early 1960s, twice as many were born.

Istat’s report is still provisional reported by Future, but shows a stable decline in the year of 3.25% and a collapse at the end of 2020: minus 8.2% in November and minus 21.63% in December, the ninth month since the start of the first lockdown. Compared to 2019, the decline should be over 5%. The pandemic could have dealt the decisive blow to an already low birth rate, not supported by an adequate welfare system.
