Mostra SP: “Rule 34” brings a complex character who works as a lawyer and camgirl

There is a pornographic version of anything that exists on the internet. It’s called “Rule 34” and it literally encompasses everything. From cartoon characters, through TV series, to video games. In the case of the feature, which was presented at the Locarno, Rio and NewFest Festivals, the character is Simone, played by Sol Miranda.

By day, she is a lawyer in training, who wants to work in the Public Defender’s Office, ensuring women’s rights and, by night, she works as a cam girl, attending to the fetishes of those who assist her in exchange for money.

Transitioning between a courtroom film and a chronicle about sexual desires, “Rule 34” is a strong feature, which addresses different types of violence applied in different ways by the characters. The film is at the 46th São Paulo International Film Festival this Friday (28) and next Wednesday (2).

“I was a little interested in the fact that I was very moral on the subject of pornography, so I started to investigate this universe a little,” said Julia Murat, director of the film.

According to her, the original idea for the film was to tell the story of a couple, around 40 years old, who made pornographic films. However, when she came across an interview with American actress Sasha Grey, the script took another direction.

“In this interview, the actress said that, for her, pornography meant expanding her own barriers; physical, psychological and emotional. There I understood what I was looking for and, then, the film came about”, said Julia.

Alongside friends and acquaintances, Simone begins to explore a world of desire that involves more and more risks. Nat (Isabela Mariotto) introduces Simone to the universe of BDSM, a slang that, in Portuguese, means “Bondage, Discipline, Domination, Submission, Sadism and Masochism”. The friend tries to give advice on how to perform this practice safely, with a reliable partner, but Simone doesn’t pay much attention, taking more and more risks.

For Julia, violence, in this case, starts with not listening.

“One thing is your desire for yourself, establishing and listening to the limit of the other. It’s another thing for you to make a decision about your desire, not respecting the other’s limits”, explains the filmmaker.

It may seem simple, but this placement is explored in several ways in the film. It illustrates, for example, cases of domestic violence that Simone is frustrated with not knowing how to solve them, and also illustrates a relationship between friends where the so-called “safe word” is used.

The ambiguity of the film’s protagonist is intriguing, as she remains firm with her convictions, both in court and on the internet, even questioning a colleague: “Who said that every prostitute is in this place because they don’t want to?”, says the character, in a clear allusion to itself.

But even so confident, Simone is still afraid. She doesn’t automatically respond, for example, to the heaviest fetishes of those who watch her on webcam, and when she does, she feels emotionally shaken.

“Simone’s desire is not where someone is going to hit, if it’s going to hurt, it’s not in this place for me”, says Julia. “I think the place is how apprehensive she is, feeling that she openly puts herself at that risk.”

The director also says that the film’s production was set up in a safe way, so that actors and actresses felt comfortable in scenes that involved sexual intercourse. And, in fact, Julia’s direction is sensitive, it doesn’t suggest any kind of judgment to the viewer, but manages to create a tension that culminates in the mysterious end of the film.

The film, therefore, was recognized at several festivals, winning the Golden Leopard at Locarno, Best Direction at the Rio Festival and now being screened at the São Paulo International Film Festival.

“Festivals and Exhibitions are the collective meeting point for us to think about the audiovisual in the world. They have a political, aesthetic, affective importance, even, in every way, it was where I formed myself as a filmmaker and person”, concludes the filmmaker.
