Mother of Brazilian killed for praising dog in Oakland says her son’s body has not yet been released

The mother of the Brazilian who was killed in the United States after praising a dog, Isabel Martines, told the CNN that still awaits the release of the boy’s body to bring him back to Brazil.

Matheus Gaidos died on June 21, after arguing with a man, who would not have liked the compliments made by the Brazilian to his dog. Matheus’s mother also claims that her son’s body underwent necropsy last Monday (3), which was confirmed by county coroners.

Still according to Isabel, the documents that will allow the transfer of the body will only be made available next Thursday (6), due to the festivities of the Independence Day of the United States. She also reinforced that she received help from the Brazilian Consulate.

The Alameda County Coroner’s Office confirmed the autopsy to CNN but said that the case is still under investigation and that they cannot give more information at the moment.

On June 21, Matheus, who had lived in the United States since 2018 and worked as a flower delivery man, allegedly had an argument with a dog owner after praising the animal.

The man would have slapped Matheus in the face and, after throwing flowers at the victim, pulled out a revolver and fired at close range. Matheus was rescued, but could not resist the injuries.

Since receiving the news of her son’s death, Isabel, who resides in Brazil, has traveled to the US to follow up on investigations and repatriate the body.

“My only son. He was very dear to his friends. He took off his clothes to help others. Always available for a friendly word, always smiling and loved dogs, and for that love, he died.” said Isabel.

A CNN she said that Oakland police released this Tuesday (04) a note in which “authorities assigned the identification of the suspect as Eric Loc Elvira, 22 years old, who was indicted by the Alameda County Prosecutor’s Office for the death of Matheus Gaidos.

Elvira remains at large. He is accused of fatally shooting Gaidos in Uptown Oakland on June 21.
