A 31-year-old woman died after being hit by a stray bullet during a Military Police action in Santos, on the coast of São Paulo. Edneia Fernandes Silva was in Praça José Lamacchia, in the Bom Retiro neighborhood, when she was shot at around 6pm on Wednesday (27).
According to the version of the Rocam police officers (Ostensive Patrol with Motorcycle Support) involved in the incident, they were patrolling the region when they saw two men on a motorcycle at high speed who ignored the order to stop and shot five times at the team, at which point they the agents retaliated.
Edneia was hit and rescued by members of the public at UPA Zona Noroeste. She was later transferred to Santa Casa de Santos, but did not survive and died this Thursday (28). The victim worked as a hairdresser and leaves behind a husband and six children.
Since the beginning of February, the Military Police have been carrying out Operation Verão in several cities in Baixada Santista, including Santos. As of this Friday (29), 55 people had already been killed in alleged clashes with the police.
According to the Public Security Secretariat (SSP), the criminals who allegedly shot at the police managed to escape after abandoning their motorcycle, which was seized. The facts were registered at the Santos Judicial Police Center.
“All circumstances relating to the facts are rigorously investigated by the 5th DP of Santos and the Military Police, which opened a Military Police Inquiry (IPM). Expert examinations were requested and, as soon as the reports are completed, they will be sent to the police authority for analysis and clarification of the case”, says the ministry, in a note.
