Mother of two, woman gives birth to quintuplets in maternity hospital in São Paulo

This Monday (10), a 28-year-old woman gave birth to quintuplets at the Vila Nova Cachoeirinha Maternity Hospital, in the north of São Paulo. The babies were born prematurely, which is common in cases of multiple births, after 29 weeks of gestation.

Yanike Piera de Cassia is already a mother of two children, aged five and three, and together with her family, she organized an internet crowdfunding to help with the costs of diapers and other expenses with the babies.

The babies will be called Isabella, Madalena, Helena, Enrico and Ravi.

Yanike’s case is considered very rare because it was a natural pregnancy. The chance of quintuplets without medical interference is about 1 in 60 million births.

“Multiple pregnancies are mostly premature and bring associated risks, such as diabetes for the mother and loss of babies”, explains physician Enoch Quinderé de Sá Barreto. The mother and babies are doing well, the maternity hospital said.

She was hospitalized at the end of last year for follow-up at the health unit and the medical team decided on elective cesarean section after monitoring the health of Yanike and the babies.

The full delivery team had more than twenty professionals and the birth was broadcast in the on-site amphitheater for professionals and students of the unit.

The Vila Nova Cachoeirinha Maternity Hospital is a reference in women’s health and serves a large portion of high-risk cases involving pregnant women.
