Although the Julia Ward Howe first proposed a day for mothers, Anna Jarvis (who did not have children of her own) campaigned for a national day of celebration for mothers, in memory of her mother, Ann Jarvis, who had spent years working to provide reimgs for poor mothers in West Virginia.
