A recent ruling against Tesla

Last week, a Florida jury found electric car maker Tesla Inc. 1% negligent in the death of an 18-year-old man whose Model S sedan crashed into a concrete wall after the speed limiter was deactivated.

Furthermore, the jury found the deceased youth and his father 99% guilty.

Monday’s verdict by a Fort Lauderdale federal jury came in what lawyers for James and Jenny Riley, whose son Barrett died in the crash, called the first trial against Tesla for an accident involving their vehicles.

Barrett Riley was driving at 187 km/h, around a curve with a speed limit of 40 km/h, on May 8, 2018, when he lost control of his 2014 Model S while trying to overtake another vehicle, causing a fire.

Another passenger was also killed while a third occupant survived.

The jury found Tesla 1% negligent; for Barrett Riley, 90% negligent; to James Riley, 9% negligent, and Jenny Riley not negligent in Barrett Riley’s death.

Tesla, led by billionaire businessman Elon Musk, said Barrett Riley’s recklessness caused the accident and that his parents should have taken his car keys after he received a speeding ticket in March 2018 for driving at 180. km/h.
