Motorola introduced a 5G necklace that acts as a “brain” for other devices

Motorola has a new unusual device. This is a 5G neckband designed for compact and lightweight VR/AR headsets such as Lenovo’s ThinkReality A3 smart glasses. The novelty is very similar to a large plastic strap. Inside, there is a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset, a 5000 mAh battery, a SIM card slot, speakers, and several sensors, including a gyroscope and an accelerometer. On the outside there is a touch panel – apparently, to control some of the functions of the gadget. The company says it’s working with Verizon so the device can connect to the carrier’s 5G mmWave network.

The idea is that the neckband, which does not have an official name, can act as the “brain” for VR or AR headsets. By getting rid of such components as a powerful processor, a heavy battery, the headset can become lighter and more comfortable to use. For example, ThinkReality A3 smart glasses are designed to work in conjunction with a laptop or computer, but it is not practical to take them with you all the time, and with a 5G necklace it is quite reasonable. This approach allows you to make the headset a portable device.

Judging by the image, the neckband looks a little ridiculous, like a portable speaker around the neck. But Motorola claims that the gadget itself is intended primarily for the corporate segment, and not for ordinary users. Verizon’s statement cites group sports training and scalable VR cinemas as some potential use cases for the device.

The gadget is compatible with the Qualcomm Snapdragon VR platform, supports the Microsoft RNDIS interface and is equipped with USB-C and DP1.4 ports. While there is no information about how much the accessory will cost and when it will be on sale. The company is currently negotiating with partners in retail, education and sports.
