Mottarone cable car, three stops: “They knew that the cabin was traveling without brakes”

Three people were stopped for the accident at the Mottarone cable car, in Verbano, which resulted in the death of 14 people and the injury of a 5-year-old child. The turning point came overnight after a day of interrogation. The three people arrested are the manager of the Luigi Nerini plant, the director of the business Enrico Perocchio and the head of the service, the engineer Gabriele Tadini.

Olimpia Bossi, owner of the investigation, explained that the suspects were “materially aware” that the cabin had been traveling without brakes since April 26, that is, from the day it reopened.

As the images had already shown in recent days, the so-called fork was placed on the implant, the device that allows you to deactivate the brake, and had not been removed. So “the crashed cabin had the emergency brake system tampered with.”

This fork that blocks the brake had not been removed so as not to stop the cable car as there was a technical problem. “The system had anomalies and it would have needed a more radical intervention with a substantial if not prolonged block ». At the time of the crash the cabin was going at 100 kilometers per hour and made a flight of 54 meters.

«A consequential development, very serious and disturbing, to the investigations we have carried out. In the belief that a cable break could never have occurred, the risk was run which unfortunately led to the fatal outcome “, explained Olimpia Bossi, leaving the barracks where the interrogations were made.

«It was a conscious choice dictated by economic reasons. The plant should have stood still, ”he concluded. Among the hypotheses of crime there are manslaughter and the willful removal of precautions against accidents at work, with the aggravating circumstance of the disaster.
