Moulin Rouge cabaret windmill blades collapse in Paris

The blades of the famous red mill at the top of the Moulin Rouge, one of the most famous cabarets in the world, fell during the early hours of this Thursday (25), in Paris, to the sadness of tourists.

“The Moulin Rouge, in its 135-year history, has experienced many adventures, but it is true that for the shovels this is the first time this has happened,” general manager Jean-Victor Clerico told reporters.

“Shortly before 2 am, the mill blades gave way, fell onto the avenue and fortunately at that moment the avenue was empty of pedestrians. We are relieved this morning especially to know that there were no injuries,” he added.

A Moulin Rouge spokesman said an investigation would be carried out into the cause of the incident with experts and insurers.

Clerico said that whatever the cause, it was not intentional.

The Moulin Rouge, founded in 1889, became a global symbol of fin-de-siècle Parisian culture, with its famous cancan dancers widely represented in paintings by avant-garde artists of the time such as Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Georges Seurat.

Nowadays, the public is mostly made up of tourist groups.

“I hope they rebuild it so it’s like it always was, the old Moulin Rouge,” said Danish tourist Lise Thygesen.

German tourist Florence Chevalier said: “It's strange for me (the Moulin Rouge), it's Paris. It's like the Eiffel Tower, it's Paris. It’s strange, you can’t say it any other way.”

And it wasn't just tourists who came to see what happened.

“Heard it on the radio. As I live next door, I wanted to see what it was like with my own eyes and it is very sad,” said Laurence Plu, a local resident.

“He is no longer Moulin, he has lost his wings, he has lost his soul.”
