The Yandex.Map team spoke about the launch of a new useful function for the map service. If earlier mountainous relief could be seen on Yandex.Maps only on satellite images, now it is displayed on the base map as well.
The developers noted the outlines of mountains and mountain ranges in Russia and around the world – the Alps and Cordillera, the volcanoes of Kamchatka and the cuestas of the Crimean Peninsula, the Khibiny and the Caucasus, and much more.
For this, the NASADEM open digital terrain model was used. It is based on data on the roughness of the earth’s surface from various sources: topographic radar imagery, satellite photos, and measurements of the thickness of the ice cover.
As noted by the developers, this is useful, for example, to see exactly where the mountains begin, or where your hotel is located: right in the mountains or nearby. Finally, it is easier to navigate on a map with a relief: for example, “Here we pass the pass and we will be in place.”
At the moment, you can study the relief in the web version of Yandex.Maps, as well as in the application for Android and iOS. As the developers promise, later on Yandex.Maps there will be more opportunities for those who are planning an active vacation.
