E-commerce and retail giant Amazon plans to launch 3,236 satellites into low Earth orbit. The company wants to create its own constellation of satellites as an alternative to Starlink and provide network access services from space.
The e-commerce and retail giant calls this project Project Kuiper. In April, Amazon signed multi-billion dollar contracts with three different organizations to help launch the satellites. We are talking about Blue Origin of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, United Launch Alliance (a joint venture between Boeing and Lockheed Martin) and European Arianespace. This is the largest rocket deal in the history of the commercial aerospace industry.

Starlink already has about 2,000 satellites in low Earth orbit, serving about 250,000 subscribers. Earlier, the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approved SpaceX’s launch of a total of 12,000 satellites. Amazon, by contrast, has yet to launch any satellites, but could still be an important player in this nascent field.
Caleb Henry, Senior Analyst at Quilty Analytics, said: “The satellite communications market is worth tens of billions of dollars and no one in the industry believes it meets the winner-take-all rule. We expect the emergence of at least two or even more space Internets. They will serve not only residential consumers, but any business or organization that depends on an Internet connection.”

According to the International Telecommunication Union, which is part of the United Nations, 37% of the world’s population has never used the Internet. In addition, 96% of them live in developing countries.
