Based on a real case, the film “Victory” starring the actress Fernanda Montenegro 95, debut this Thursday (13) in theaters. Because it is a delicate subject, the feature film It took almost two decades to get out of paper.
In material obtained by CNN the director Andrucha waddington son -in -law of Montenegro and responsible for taking over the work, gave details of how it was careful about building the film, as was the contact with the royal protagonist of history (who had identity protected by the witness protection program), and how he expects the impact caused by production.
Fernanda Montenegro plays the protagonist Dona Nina who lives in a slum surrounded by violence. One day she decides to document the crimes on her own, from filming recorded on VHS tapes, made from the window of her home in the South Zone of Rio.
In real life, the crimes were recorded by Joana da Paz, a woman who was responsible for unmasking a large gang of corrupt traffickers and police. The case was accompanied by journalist Fabio Gusmão, who revealed all the details in a story published in 2005. When the report was aired, the woman was renamed “victory” and was forced to live “hidden” until her death in 2023.
“A week after Fábio Gusmão’s story came out in the Extra newspaper, I found him and said he wanted to make a movie inspired by Dona Vitória’s life, but I was afraid to expose her. I thought It would be good to wait about 20 years because I knew she had entered the protection program, ”said Andrucha.
“After a decade, Fábio had already written the book about the story of Dona Vitória and Breno Silveira called me showing a huge desire to make the movie, I thought it was great and passed all the material for him to develop the project,” he continued.
Breno Silveira, however, died early in filming in May 2022, when Fernanda Torres’s husband took over.
Construction of “victory”
According to the filmmaker, the film is about a solitary confrontation . “We try to be absolutely realistic in the direction of art and photography, as well as in makeup and costumes, portraying a raw and somewhat claustrophobic Copacabana,” he explained.
The feature film also sought to be “raw” and “neorealist”, where the harsh reality imposes itself in every aspect of the character’s life.
He and the team sought to be careful that the film would not fall into the “melodrama of a fragile and frightened lady.” “Dona Nina is a resilient woman who, for example, arrives at the police station and speaks of the same to the major or who she needs,” he said.
“My search was to build this character by emphasizing his humanity with his dreams and weaknesses. She is an extraordinary character, a woman faithful to her
Principles and willing to overcome the limits of your daily life to fight for what you believe to be right. She is a witness to a reality in which violence imposes itself in her daily life. He feels deeply disturbed by the omission of the police and also by the inaction of those who live in his building. ”
Work with Joana da Paz
The relationship between the film and the true character, Dona Joana, has always taken into account her fear of being recognized, explained Andrucha. He even had conversations with Joana da Paz, but worked to ensure women’s safety.
“All creative decisions sought to distance their identity from the character Nina, ensuring their safety. For this reason, all the material recorded during research conversations was filmed against a wall, as Joana feared even if the environment around her could reveal her identity and location. ”
Joana da Paz passed away February 22, 2023, months after the filming.
“I think the audience can expect a very exciting movie. ‘Victory’ talks about a Brazilian social situation present in virtually every great city in the country, through an unlikely heroine and his relationship with an inconshand reporter, who extends his hands and does everything to protect her to the last consequences, creating a beautiful story of fraternal love between the two, ”concludes the director.
