Moving average of Covid-19 cases in Brazil increases 129% in one week

Brazil reported 48,520 new cases of Covid-19 this Saturday (16). With that, the moving average of infections by the virus reached 68,028, a number 128.9% higher than the one registered a week ago.

As for deaths from the disease, 175 were recorded in the last 14 hours. The moving average of deaths is at 148, an increase of 24% compared to the previous week.

In recent days, the bulletins released by the Ministry of Health have shown an increase in the number of new infections confirmed in Brazil. Last Friday (14), the country again recorded more than 100,000 cases in 24 hours. However, data on deaths rise more slowly.

experts consulted by CNN explain that the mismatch between the two indices may have multifactorial causes.

One of the hypotheses is the indication that the Ômicron variant, which has spread rapidly across the country, is associated with milder clinical conditions. Another relevant point is the advance of vaccination, achieved especially in the second half of 2021.

The exposure of a large part of the population to the natural infection by the virus, which confers some immunity, can also contribute to the number of deaths remaining stable.
