The Public Prosecutor’s Office at the Federal Court of Auditors made a representation to the Court in which it requests that President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) and the presidency of Caixa Econômica Federal be held accountable for changes in the procedures adopted by the state-owned company for granting payroll loans to beneficiaries of the Assistance to Brazil after the 2022 presidential elections.
According to the MP, the measure had a “merely electoral” purpose, even more so because after Bolsonaro’s defeat in the elections, Caixa changed rules and cut the release of payroll loans from Auxílio Brasil.
“Why such a sudden change after the defeat of candidate Jair Bolsonaro in the elections? What changed during the election period and the period in which he was defeated? The facts speak for themselves! There is no denying that the evidence was wide open in the eyes of society and this Court of Auditors, not deserving, once again, the shelving. Once again: if before, countless consignments were authorized and with extreme agility, why did it change after the elections?”, asked the MP.
For attorney Lucas Furtado, the fact constitutes an extremely serious occurrence, including common criminal and liability implications, outside the jurisdiction of the Court of Accounts. The offense, however, also has its administrative dimension, which cannot be neglected and requires the action of External Control.
“In this sphere, there is the possibility that the public company has incurred in flagrant deviation from public purpose, improperly using its resources and its structure to interfere politically in the presidential elections, a situation that notoriously demands the action of the TCU”, he said.
Suspension
In October, the Public Prosecutor’s Office had asked the Court to suspend the procedures adopted by Caixa for granting payroll loans to Auxílio Brasil beneficiaries.
THE CNN contacted Planalto and Caixa Econômica Federal and is awaiting a response.
