The Public Ministry of Mato Grosso do Sul is carrying out, this Tuesday (21), an operation against a criminal organization suspected of embezzling more than R$6 million from the state's football, through the MS Football Federation.
Agents from the Special Action Group for the Repression of Organized Crime (GAECO) served seven preventive arrest warrants and 14 search and seizure warrants in three cities in the state in this operation called “Red Card”.
The investigation lasted around 20 months and revealed that a group of people settled in the Federation to divert values for their own benefit and that of third parties.
The amount diverted came from the state, the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) and amounts intended for hotel accommodation, paid by the MS government in state championship games.
According to investigators, the group carried out more than 1,200 withdrawals worth less than R$5,000, in an attempt to outwit control bodies. The money was later divided among the members of the scheme.
During the action, today, agents have already seized more than R$800,000 in cash.
A CNN requested a position from the Football Federation of Mato Grosso do Sul and is awaiting feedback.
