MP denounces woman suspected of poisoning and killing 26 cats in the interior of SP

The Public Ministry of São Paulo (MP-SP) denounced on Friday (17), Aparecida Donizeti Berigo Blesio, aged 60, suspected of causing the death of 26 cats by poisoning in the city of São Joaquim da Barra, in the interior of São Paulo.

Aparecida’s preventive detention was ordered by the Courts after investigations carried out by the Civil Police, on January 9th.

According to the complaint, the crime occurred on December 27, 2024, when the suspect spread poisoned meat on the street, resulting in the death of the animals that ate the contaminated food.

According to the MP, security cameras recorded the exact moment the woman deposited the pieces of contaminated meat on Rua Paraná, close to her residence.

In a video obtained by CNN it is possible to see the suspect throwing the food near a tree when some cats approach the poisoned food. See below:

In addition to the complaint, the MP-SP also requested judicial authorization to access the information stored on the accused’s cell phone.

The objective is to seek additional evidence that can provide more details about the crime, such as the origin of the poison used, possible accomplices or other evidence that reinforces the accusation.

According to the document, the motivation would be the woman’s dissatisfaction with the presence of cats in the region. The act was classified as aggravated ill-treatment, based on article 32 of the Environmental Crimes Law (Law nº 9,605/98).

The expected penalty is 2 to 5 years in prison, in addition to a fine. The sentence can be increased by one-sixth to one-third due to the death of the animals, constituting an aggravating factor.

What the defense says

The suspect’s defense lawyer, Vinicius Magalhães Guilherme, sent a note to the CNN and questioned the court decision.

According to him, the preventive detention “was based solely on the abstract gravity of the crime and the popular outcry”. The lawyer stated that will file a request for habeas corpus at the São Paulo Court of Justice (TJ-SP) to seek the client’s freedom.

Remember the case

According to the São Paulo Public Security Secretariat, the case began when a resident reported to the police station that 15 of her cats had been found poisoned and dead, on December 27th and 28th, 2024.

The animals presented excessive salivation with white secretion, diarrhea and convulsions.

The woman reported having witnessed a neighbor throwing ground meat mixed with a suspicious substance near the residence. Other neighbors also reported finding more dead cats nearby.

Residents filed a police report and organized an online raffle to pay for toxicological tests on the animals. Delegate Gustavo de Almeida Costa, responsible for the investigations, confirmed the death of the cats and stated that samples of the suspected food were collected for toxicological analysis.

During the examination, a blue substance that appears to be rat poison was found in the bodies of the animals. The results of the exams have not yet been finalized.
