The Public Ministry of Bahia presented last Monday (02) a series of suggestions for the plan to reduce police lethality in the state, which will be presented by the Public Security Secretariat.
The main suggestion is the use of body cameras on military police uniforms, which are in the bidding process for the department and should be acquired later this month.
Bahia recorded at least 71 deaths during clashes with the police in September, including two of military police and one of a federal police officer. The federal government is monitoring the situation and will send R$20 million to help combat criminal organizations.
In conversation with the CNN prosecutor Luis Alberto Vasconcelos, coordinator of the Public Security Operational Support Center (Ceosp), stated that, in addition to body cameras, the government of Bahia should invest in a vehicle georeferencing system, so that it is possible to know in advance which detachment each police officer is in, and also in stricter control of ammunition and weapons.
“It is necessary to identify more quickly which battalion is involved and with which ammunition someone’s death occurred,” he said.
Furthermore, the MP proposed that the Bahia PM start paying a premium to battalions that manage to reduce lethality, which, according to the prosecutor, requires a broad mapping of the reasons that motivate certain groups of police officers to be more violent than others.
