The Public Ministry of Rio Grande do Norte (MP-RN) launched an operation this Tuesday (25) against a gang that used fake profiles on WhatsApp to carry out scams against family members of public servants in the state.
Three search and seizure warrants were executed in the city of Goiânia (GO). The operation continues to investigate crimes of embezzlement through electronic fraud, false identity attribution and money laundering.
According to investigations, the three investigated had carried out the blows against three victims.
How the scheme worked
Known as Fake WhatsApp, criminals pretended to be relatives of servers to try to obtain financial advantages.
Initially, the suspects were able, possibly on the internet, to access photographs of the people they intended to impersonate.
Then, using the image, the group created a fake profile on WhatsApp. From there, the suspects contacted the victims to inform them about the “change of number” of the supposed relative.
At that same moment, the suspects took the opportunity to simulate an unfavorable and urgent economic circumstance to justify a false request for financial assistance.
The scams in question and which are investigated by the MP-RN in the operation were carried out in 2021. The Public Ministry is still investigating the involvement of other people with the scams and the existence of other victims of the suspected group.
