MP-RJ investigates complaints about police operation in Complexo do Alemão

The Public Ministry of the State of Rio de Janeiro (MP-RJ) is investigating complaints about the police operation that left 17 people dead in Complexo do Alemão, last Thursday (21). In a note, the MP states that they refer to 30 facts that occurred during the operation.

The agency also recommended that the police carry out investigations at crime scenes, including the car where Letícia Marinho Sales, 50, was hit and killed.

According to the victim’s daughter, Letícia and her boyfriend were returning home to Recreio dos Bandeirantes along Estrada do Itararé when they stopped at a traffic light. Then, an agent who was at the scene crossed the road and, according to the family’s testimony, shot the victim’s car.

According to the MP-RJ, an expert was assigned to accompany the expertise on the bodies of people killed during the operation. The analysis of compliance with ADPF nº 635 will also be verified by the promoter.

The Public Defender’s Office and the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB) of RJ expressed concern after receiving complaints of failure to provide assistance, home invasions, threats and summary executions, which were denied by state security forces at a press conference.

The action, which lasted about 10 hours, had repercussions in the international press and was highlighted in the pages of vehicles such as ABC News and Washington Post, from the USA, France 24, from France, the Spanish agency EFE, the German portal of Deutsche Welle, the Al Jazeera network in the Middle East, the BBC in London in the United Kingdom, and the international agencies Reuters and Associated Press.

Among those killed in the Alemão operation are 15 suspects, according to police, a military policeman and the autonomous Letícia.

The day after the operation, the Military Police carried out another action in Complexo do Alemão to remove barricades placed by drug traffickers at the accesses to the community. During a confrontation between police and criminals in the town of Caixa D’água, Solange Mendes, 49, was shot in the head on her way back from the market.

Friend of the family, Pastor Carlos dos Santos arrived at the scene when the woman was injured on the ground. According to the pastor, witnesses cannot say where the shots came from. He says the family is very shaken and prefers not to talk about the case.

“The family is angry with the situation, they want to move away. What they say is that if the cops hadn’t been there, this wouldn’t have happened. It is said that they did not need to remove the barricades the day after the operation. And those who are hostage to this war are the residents, who remain very apprehensive about the possibility of new actions in Alemão,” says Carlos dos Santos.

Solange sold hot drinks to help support the family, along with her husband, known as Raminho. She leaves a 20-year-old daughter and an underage boy.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Ivan Blaz, spokesman for the corporation, Solange passed a team of police officers from the Nova Brasília UPP as they removed a barricade. According to the PM, the police were attacked by gunfire from criminals, which hit Solange.

The corporation mourned the death of the resident and two other victims — Corporal Bruno Costa and Letícia Marinho.

“We understand the behavior of the resident as natural when he accuses the police of force and oppression of local crime. But it is unacceptable to imagine that some segments of society tend to naturalize the presence of heavily armed criminals in these communities, always accusing the police, as if we were a unilateral part of this reality, without even mentioning the presence of bandits and their rifles,” Blaz said in a statement. video sent to the press.
