The Public Ministry of Rio de Janeiro will seek the maximum sentence for the executioners of councilor Marielle Franco and driver Anderson Gomes.
The trial of confessed defendants Ronnie Lessa and Élcio de Queiroz takes place this Wednesday (30), from 9am, at the 4th Jury Court in Rio de Janeiro.
The sentence for former military police officers can reach 84 years in prison . Lessa’s defense believes that the trial will end on the same day, but will seek a “fair conviction”.
The maximum sentence will be sought by the Specialized Action Group to Combat Organized Crime for the Marielle Franco and Anderson Gomes Case (GAECO/FTMA) of the MPRJ.
Lessa and Queiroz are accused of double triple homicide, an attempted homicide and the reception of the Chevrolet Cobalt car used in the crime, which occurred on March 14, 2018.
The two were arrested by agents from the Federal Police and MPRJ in March 2019, during Operation Lume.
For this Wednesday’s Jury Court (30), 21 people were selected and seven will be drawn immediately to form the jury that will define the responsibility of those accused for the crimes.
During the trial, the jurors will be incommunicado and will sleep in the restricted premises of the RJ Court of Justice. The ministry intends to hear seven witnesses.
According to the MPRJ, the prosecution will rely on the testimonies of the only survivor of the attack: journalist Fernanda Chaves, who was in the car with the councilor and the driver.
Relatives of the victims and two civil police officers will also be interviewed. The process that led to the arrest of Ronnie Lessa and Élcio de Queiroz has 13,680 pages.
The accused will be heard via videoconference. Lessa is detained at the Tremembé Penitentiary Complex, in São Paulo, and Queiroz is detained at the Complexo da Papuda, a federal prison in Brasília.
