MPB icon, Gilberto Gil turns 80 this Sunday (26)

The singer Gilberto Gil , icon of Brazilian Popular Music (MPB), turns 80 this Sunday (26). In homage, the Central Office of Collection and Distribution (ECAD) carried out a survey with some curiosities about the artist’s career.

Gil has 784 songs, 2,529 recordings, nearly 60 albums, 4 million copies sold and 9 grammys. The most repeated words in Gil’s songs are “amor” (18 times), “filme” (13 mentions), “dia” and “samba” (9 times each) and “sol” (8 records).

In April, the singer took office at the Academia Brasileira de Letras (ABL), occupying seat number 20. He was elected in 2021, with 21 of the 34 possible votes.

In 2021, Gil participated in the program CNN Vital Signs talking about longevity and quality of life.

“We start to feel that one day everything will end. Medical care came with age. From the age of 60 onwards, care became more constant and intense,” she said.

The son of a doctor, Gil says that prevention has always been part of his daily life. “Death will come anyway, so it’s important to be prepared for the passing of this body so that its non-existence is a smooth thing. May you have the best possible health, the best amount of physical and mental well-being,” he comments.
