MPF evaluates installation of cameras in uniforms of PRF agents after “gas chamber”

The Federal Public Ministry will investigate the need to use a video camera on the uniforms of PRF (Federal Highway Police) agents during policing. The procedure was opened from the investigations to investigate the conduct of federal highway police officers in Umbaúba, Sergipe, on May 23, when Genivaldo de Jesus Santos died after being asphyxiated in a kind of “gas chamber” in the trunk. of a PRF vehicle.

The Federal Prosecutor for the External Control of Police Activity in Sergipe, Flávio Matias, said that the emergence of a second case involving aggressions by federal highway police against people approached in Umbaúba generates the need to evaluate the use of body video cameras.

“The analysis of the use of cameras is even more necessary, says the document, if we consider the content of the first note released to the press by the Federal Highway Police regarding the death of Genivaldo de Jesus, in which information was later contradicted by the recordings made by people who witnessed the tragic approach, only later did the PRF change its stance and recriminate the serious acts carried out by its agents in this specific case”, says the note from the MPF.

According to the communication, from the start of the investigation, official letters were sent to the Public Security secretariats of the 26 states and the Federal District, requesting information on the use of video cameras in the uniforms of agents.

In positive cases, the secretariats must forward to the MPF copies of the technical studies and the term of reference that supported the decision to adopt body video cameras by police officers who work in the ostensible policing activity. The secretariats have 15 days from the receipt of the letter to respond.

“Gas chamber”

Genivaldo died on approach and videos shared on social media showed the PRF car being used as a “gas chamber” with the victim trapped in the trunk.

He suffered from mental disorders, according to family reports. The initial report from the Legal Medical Institute confirmed the death from asphyxia and respiratory failure. The Civil and Federal police are investigating the case.

“The stop order was given, he stopped, put the bike on the stand and answered all the commands. The policeman asked him to lift his shirt, he did it and said he had the medicine in his pocket and with the prescription indicating that he has mental problems, that’s when the policeman called for backup”, says Wallyson de Jesus, Genivaldo’s nephew, in occasion.

The Commission on Human Rights and Minorities of the Chamber of Deputies last week approved the summons of the Minister of Justice, Anderson Torres, to explain the actions of the PRF in the case that culminated in the death of Genivaldo.

The minister expressed himself through a note sent by his advisor. “The Minister of Justice and Public Security, Anderson Torres is, and has always been, at the disposal of Parliament for clarification of issues related to the portfolio. As soon as the compatibility of the agenda is aligned, Minister Anderson Torres will be able to appear in the Chamber of Deputies.”
