The city of Petrópolis has received donations of money, food and clothing to help with the reconstruction of the city and search and rescue services after the tragedy that has left more than 180 dead.
The Federal Public Ministry (MPF) in Rio de Janeiro reported that it will supervise the application of emergency federal resources received by the municipality. So far, the Union has already authorized the transfer of about R$ 3 million to repair “damage and attention to the victims of the rains”.
According to the agency, the objective is to simultaneously monitor “the transfer processes by the National Secretariat for Civil Protection and Defense and the adequate application of resources by the municipality”, as informed by the MPF in a note released this Tuesday ( 22).
The MPF intends to verify the execution of the intended services and the acquisition of the products at the destination locations. This monitoring occurs especially as it involves a process in which such contracts and allocated funds do not need to go through bidding processes, since there is a state of public calamity.
The municipality of Petrópolis has, so far, made three requests for transfer of funds from the Union. All of them have already been authorized.
The money, informed the MPF in the note sent, “should be applied to cleaning affected areas, clearing channels, buying basic food baskets, personal hygiene kits, cleaning kits for homes and dormitory items for affected families, in addition to vehicle rental for logistical support for rehabilitation and assistance actions”.
The National Secretariat of Civil Defense and Protection (Sedec), linked to the Ministry of Regional Development, recognized the state of public calamity on the 16th, the day after the storm that devastated the Historic Center of Petrópolis.
With the establishment of the procedure to monitor the allocation of federal funds, the MPF officiated the municipal secretariats responsible for the application of resources to find out what is actually being hired.
So far, the tragedy resulting from heavy rains last Tuesday (15), which culminated in landslides and flooding, has left 182 dead, more than 800 homeless and dozens missing in the mountain town.
