The Public Ministry of Rio Grande do Sul (MPRS) charged the owners of a restaurant and an employee with the death of a 26-year-old indigenous woman in Rio Grande (RS). She died after suffering severe burns during a graduation celebration.
Young Jaqueline Tedesco had 30% of her body burned on March 9, 2024, while celebrating with family and friends in a restaurant. The accident occurred due to flames from a smelter.
The MPRS charged the owners of the commercial establishment, a 38-year-old man and a 36-year-old woman, with culpable homicide, when there is no intention to kill. The two will also be responsible for two bodily injuries to the victim’s family members. The 19-year-old employee involved in the accident was also charged.
The MPRS requested the immediate suspension of the restaurant’s activities until the necessary adjustments are made to ensure the safety of customers. The final decision will rest with the Judiciary.
Remember the case
The young woman suffered third-degree burns while celebrating her graduation at a restaurant in Rio Grande, on the coast of Rio Grande do Sul, around 320 kilometers from Porto Alegre.
Jaqueline celebrated her law degree from the Federal University of Rio Grande. The young woman was the first indigenous woman to occupy the General Coordination of the DCE and is a member of the Kizomba Movement, which fights for indigenous rights.
The death of the young woman whose body was burned after an accident with fondue during graduation was caused by a failure to replace the alcohol in the equipment. According to the MPRS, the restaurant employee, without adequate training and supervision, poured alcohol gel directly into the chafing dish, ignoring the presence of fire and safety standards.
The student’s family stated that there was negligence and failure to provide assistance on the part of the establishment and that Jaqueline’s mother and boyfriend, who were also there at the time of the accident, did not receive any support from the restaurant.
At the time of the events, the restaurant Le Petit published a statement on its social networks about the case. The establishment stated that it provided assistance to Jaqueline’s family. The publication, however, was deleted.
