Mr. Ah. Karamanlis: The issue of wiretapping is very serious, it is a matter of democracy

“The issue of eavesdropping is a very serious issue and anyone who hides behind their finger and tries to downplay it will commit a great political error. I would even tell you that it is also an issue of Democracy” stressed the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Costas Karamanlis speaking on Parapolitika 90.1 FM and on the show “Bra de fer” with Mr. Dimitris Takis and Mrs. Christina Korai.

He added: “In matters of democracy, no faction is more sensitive than the faction that guaranteed democracy in our country in 1974.”

Mr. Karamanlis commented on the accusations of the official opposition leader against the prime minister, considering that “it does not even stand up to a debate to say that the prime minister knew about the surveillance of Androulakis. He certainly did not know, could not have known and would have had no logic to know and not react. The proof is that as soon as he found out, he mobilized the known developments”.

The Minister of Infrastructure and Transport noted that “the prime minister himself, Kyriakos Mitsotakis himself, said it was a mistake. He did something rare in the Greek political scene. He made a brave self-criticism”.

Mr. Karamanlis mentioned that another question arises: Yes or no to the surveillance of political figures? He commented that the first obvious answer is “no, because political life cannot be subject to surveillance”. He added, however, that “we politicians cannot exempt ourselves from any control, because we are not superior to the rest of the Greek citizens”.

Asked about the messages of yesterday’s cabinet, he kept the prime minister’s remark that strong states are stable states. He referred to the energy crisis, which comes as a consequence of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, as well as economic difficulties, with inflation at historic highs. And he estimated that despite the clouds on the international horizon and despite the extremely difficult winter ahead, even those who criticize the New Democracy for any mistakes made, will admit that when it comes to major crises, it has proven that it can cope with great efficiency.

Finally, the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport stated that the last three stations of the Metro extension to Piraeus will be handed over to traffic by the beginning of October, pointing out that the country’s largest port will finally be connected to the country’s largest airport.
