EU High Representative Josep Borrell said on Saturday that Iran and world powers were very close to an agreement to revive the 2015 nuclear deal, which would curtail Tehran’s nuclear program in exchange for lifting tough sanctions. Borel made the remarks speaking at the Doha Forum international conference, Reuters reports.
The talks were close to reaching an agreement until Russia made last-minute demands from the United States, insisting that sanctions imposed on Moscow over its invasion of Ukraine should not affect its trade with Iran.
Enrique Mora, the EU’s nuclear co-ordinator, said on Friday he would travel to Tehran on Saturday to meet with Iran’s chief negotiator.
Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian said this week that a nuclear deal could be reached in the short term if the United States is realistic.
But US officials were more cautious in their assessment of the deal’s revival efforts.
