Mr. Mitsotakis: The Action Plan for Gender Equality will address pathogens of society

The great importance of increasing the participation of women in the labor market, stressed the Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, speaking today at the event for the presentation of the National Action Plan for Gender Equality 2021-2025.

The Prime Minister referred to the Plan and described it as complete and strengthened with financial tools that will address the pathogenesis of society starting with violence against women.

Mr. Mitsotakis characterized the “metoo movement as an awareness-raising revolution” and stressed that the increased participation of women in the labor market, apart from the moral obligation of the state, has a development imprint.

As she said, we are third from the bottom in the ranking of women in the labor market, and this “we have to deal with, it is extremely important from an economic point of view for the goal of development”.

The prime minister noted that “we must achieve equal participation of men and women in responsibilities such as raising children”, while referring to the program “Neighborhood nannies” which he described as “a very important aid” funded by the NSRF.

Mr. Mitsotakis set another parameter, pointing out that “we should be concerned about whether the trend of working from home works for or against women. We do not know that yet.”

He added that the number of girls who choose schools that were previously identified with male professions is gradually increasing and cited the example of the first female pilot, something that “goes beyond our stereotypes”.

“Every man or woman should claim their professional development regardless of gender” said Mr. Mitsotakis and noted that the participation of women in the highest levels of business and political representation is reduced, not only in Greece but in Europe.

“The percentage of women in Parliament is desperately low. We have women on the ballot but they are not voted by the electorate, they are not voted by women who constitute 50% of the electorate. Let us evaluate this in terms of our electoral behavior,” said the Prime Minister. .

He referred to an example in the past, where a candidate for MP told his voters “to vote for a woman”. “Why one and not five?” Mr. Mitsotakis asked: “The PD is the best proof that there are no limits to the aspirations of young girls. Today in 2021 in the highest state office is a woman who was inspired in her judicial path by another supreme judge of the American “Constitutional Court’s Ruth Ginsberg, who developed the whole theory to defend the concept of equality, arguing for the equality of men in cases where men were discriminated against. Because discrimination concerns everyone and is not unambiguous.”

Finally, he thanked the opposition MPs who were present, saying that it is important to move synthetically on these issues, which do not have a party color.

“These are progressive policies, and these policies will be passed on to future generations to minimize discrimination and stereotypes, and to put into practice the equality we all seek.”
