MS declares emergency in municipalities hit by forest fires

The governor of Mato Grosso do Sul, Eduardo Riedel (PSDB), published this Monday (24) a decree declaring a situation of emergency for 180 days in the state’s municipalities that were affected by forest fires.

During this period, actions that are related to the disaster and focused on the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the scenario are authorized and can be mobilized by state bodies to act under the coordination of the Civil Defense of Mato Grosso do Sul.

Among the places included in the decree signed by the governor, parks and national protection and preservation areas stand out. In the most urgent cases, defense agents are authorized to enter homes to provide assistance, determine evacuation and use private property.

Therefore, there is no need to carry out bidding in cases of emergency or public calamity, with the aim of not compromising the continuity of public works in relation to works, acquisition of equipment and services.

According to the state government, the emergency situation was declared as a result of the combination of several factors, including:

  • Dry period that Mato Grosso do Sul has faced (with cases of prolonged drought and significant increase in heat);
  • Impacts of fires on Pantanal agriculture.

The Pantanal is facing a serious environmental crisis due to forest fires that are ravaging the biome. In an interview with CNN last Tuesday (18), Gustavo Figueiroa, a biologist at SOS Pantanal, stated that the current situation is 96% worse than in 2020, a record year for fires in the region.
